Full Job Description

Hours of work: 37 hours per week (over an alternating shift pattern and ad hoc weekend work), The role of this post is to assist in the provision of an effective and responsive caretaking and maintenance service for the College Estate., 1. Locking/securing and unlocking of buildings and setting/deactivation of alarms. Liaison with Security Personnel. 2. General duties in line with individual skills and experience drawn from the following: - Basic Electrical repairs and maintenance including lights and fittings - Basic Plumbing repairs and maintenance - Basic Carpentry repairs and maintenance - Routine painting and decorating 3. Undertaking above work in line with planned and reactive work requirements through appropriate request and logging mechanisms. Replenishment of consumable supplies. Materials and equipment to carry out such works. 4. To assist in the monitoring and maintenance of the grounds, to include such things as cutting grass, pruning hedges. And the weeding of flower beds and litter picking. 5. To maintain all external pathways, ramps and steps and other areas used by College staff, to ensure safety by gritting before and after snow falls or during periods of heavy frost, including the clearing of snow. 6. To assist in monitoring, maintenance & optimisation of the heating systems and building plant & equipment in accordance with the planned preventative, reactive requirements & Operation Manuals (O&Ms) requirements. 7. Monitoring of fire and intruder alarm systems, including panels and ancillary equipment. Assisting with routine testing of systems and in the event of an emergency, ensuring that the buildings are in a safe condition. The Post holder will be expected to undertake first aid and Fire Warden Training. In the event of an emergency evacuation the post holder will be expected to undertake key duties for which training will be provided. 8. In the event of an emergency affecting any College building ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to minimise loss or harm to college buildings or property including notifying Line Management as required. 9. Monitoring the cleanliness of the building. Including general cleaning and sweeping duties and cleaning ground floor windows and other windows using equipment supplied. 10. Portering duties including the movement of furniture and equipment. 11. To undertake room and circulation area checks on a regular basis, reporting any defects where remedial repairs cannot be undertaken, this should include fittings and furniture. 12. Liaise with external contractors visiting the site, providing a key holder service as required. 13. The post holder will be expected to work shifts and the appointee may be expected to provide general supervision to assistant caretakers or trainees and to attend departmental meetings as required. 14. To travel between sites and off-site as required to provide service duties as requested & to cover minibus driving duties to which training will be provided. Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prompt reporting of any health and safety issues to your line manager. Responsibility for maintaining a safe and clean working environment. Any other health and Safety duties commensurate with your post and as directed by your line manager.
  • To assist in the upkeep of the department's equipment inventory system and records e.g. PPMs & O&Ms.
  • To work flexibly within the team and undertake other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the post as determined by the line manager or other managers with the department, e.g. covering sifts due to absences or holiday, working open days, and being present in the case of an emergency etc.
  • To carry out all duties in accordance with the College's Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • To carry out any other duties as directed by your Line Manager.
