- Location : Open, but with frequent travel to Guinea (and potential travel to other Rio Tinto sites and offices) About the role Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs. We are looking for a Principal Advisor, Biodiversity Offsets, a subject matter expert who will lead the development and implementation of biodiversity offset strategies, ensuring they are scientifically robust and culturally sensitive. This is a great opportunity for a skilled and experienced individual with a strong background in biodiversity conservation, community engagement, and cultural anthropology to make a lasting impact on the company's sustainability efforts in Guinea. Reporting to the Senior BP - Nature Strategy and Partnerships and working in a collaborative community within the Biodiversity and Sustainability team, you will be :
- Providing technical expertise and guidance on biodiversity offset strategies in Guinea
- Developing scientifically sound, culturally appropriate, and internationally aligned biodiversity offset plans
- Supporting senior management in decision-making related to biodiversity offset projects
- Integrating community and cultural considerations into biodiversity offset strategies
- Engaging with local communities to understand and incorporate their cultural values and biodiversity needs
- Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and local communities
- Designing monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess biodiversity offset projects
- Providing training and capacity-building support to staff and local partners
A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team. - A Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Anthropology, or a related field (Master's preferred)
- At least 10 years of experience in biodiversity conservation, with a focus on biodiversity offsets and community engagement
- Proven expertise in integrating biodiversity, anthropology, and community relations, with experience in Africa or similar contexts
- Strong background in designing, implementing, and evaluating biodiversity offset projects
- Experience working with NGOs in a developing context, particularly in Africa
- Excellent organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders
