Full Job Description

The Specialist Teaching Team within the SEN team at City of York Council are looking to appoint a qualified Teacher of the Deaf to join a committed and dynamic team starting as soon as possible. This teacher will promote the development of d/Deaf and hearing impaired children within the home and educational or community settings. They will provide teaching, advice and guidance, finding the best ways to support Children and Young People (CYP) towards independence and attainment. We are looking for a colleague who

  • Is a successful and qualified teacher of the deaf with experience of working with children and young people with a range of Hearing loss
  • Has CACDP British Sign Language Stage Two or equivalent or expressed commitment to achieve Stage 2 BSL if not already qualified
  • Is committed to an inclusive philosophy and practice and has a proven track record of working with children and young people with a range of SEND.
  • Is passionate about delivering better outcomes for children.
  • Is an excellent team player with experience of working in a multi-professional environment
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills to liaise and work closely with schools, parents and other professionals involved with children and young people including experience of successfully working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Is committed to continuing professional development to keep up to date with national, regional and local issues which affect the education of d/Deaf pupils

  • As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C1: Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously, almost effortlessly. Only a conceptually difficult subject can hinder a natural, smooth flow of language.
