Full Job Description

The Mission Delivery Unit (MDU) sits at the heart of mission delivery across government, providing insight and advice to the Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster on the effective delivery of mission led government. The unit is focused on assuring the long-term delivery of the five Mission and six First steps that will make a meaningful difference to the lives of citizens. The MDU is a small, high performing team with significant subject insight, able to apply delivery expertise and performance oversight to each of the missions and first steps. The Take Back our Streets mission is focused on the reduction of serious crime and violence against women and girls, whilst building confidence in the police and the wider criminal justice system. You will have the knowledge and networks to build a trusting and supportive relationship between MDU and the leadership of the mission. You will be required to apply a range of delivery interventions and problem-solving techniques, building a broad network of expertise relevant to mission delivery, whilst maintaining a keen eye on the outcomes being delivered by the mission. You will also work across the missions to ensure a coherent approach and manage trade-offs and challenges that emerge. The successful candidate will be a key member of the Mission Delivery Unit, contributing to the corporate functions of the Unit; currently MDU comprises around 26 staff, including seven senior civil servants. You will be a strong and respected leader, able to work collegiately and collaboratively with all. You will be comfortable working with data to provide insight to your work and will be highly competent into distilling broad and complex information sources into accessible formats for seniors that enables informed decision making. Ultimately, your value will be in the judgements that you are able to make about delivery, where and how more might be done to press ahead with the government's agenda. If this is the type of challenge that you relish, we look forward to your application. The jobholder will work in the Safer Streets Mission team of the Mission Delivery Unit, drawing on their experience in delivering for citizens to tackle the most pressing problems of our time, right in the heart of government. The Safer Streets mission is focused on tackling knife crime and violence against women and girls whilst ensuring there is confidence in the criminal justice system. As Senior Delivery Adviser in the Safer Streets Mission team, your responsibilities would include:

  • Working closely with Home Office, other government departments, and external partners in the delivery chain, ensuring a focus on clear mission definition, key outcomes, and performance;
  • Collaborating with Home Office and other departments to identify, structure and solve delivery challenges and to build creative solutions;
  • Work with data experts both in departments, in No10 and beyond to develop a world-class system for collecting information on, and visualising progress in delivery;
  • Persuasively negotiating with senior stakeholders across and beyond government to gain buy-in for solutions and drive the best outcome for citizens;
  • Able to crystallise multiple, complex information sources - both qualitative and quantitative - into clear and accessible decisions for Ministers;
  • Horizon scanning for potential future delivery issues, ensuring early intervention;
  • Acting as a deputy for the Deputy Director as required;
  • Taking a leadership role within the Mission Delivery Unit, driving corporate workstreams to ensure the Unit is a great place to work.
