Full Job Description

Our current responsibilities include regulating sewage treatment works, storm overflows, and ensuring compliance with water flow standards. But now, with an increased awareness of the impact of sewage on the environment, we are even more committed to transforming the way the water industry is regulated. We are driving better performance and using our resources more effectively to protect our environment. Your role As a Senior Regulatory Environment Officer, you'll play a direct role in creating a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment. By continuously improving how we regulate water companies, you'll ensure that their activities do not harm the environment or people in any way. You'll be responsible for planning and delivering complex regulatory tasks, such as inspections, audits, and incident investigations. You will also provide evidence and technical expertise to support managers, contribute to the development and delivery of our training programmes, and identify best practices to enhance the regulation and performance of water companies. When water companies fail to comply with legislation, you'll take enforcement action. In the most serious cases, you may be required to give evidence in court. Additionally, you'll participate in incident response - a central aspect of our role as regulators. This important work comes with additional pay, training and support, as it requires availability to respond whenever an incident occurs., Please note that a reserve list will be maintained, and you may be offered other roles in different locations that align closely with this position.

We're seeking individuals with a strong understanding of how water company activities can impact the environment, backed by three years of experience in the water industry, particularly within regulation and compliance. We do, however, still welcome applications from candidates who may not meet this exact experience requirement but can still demonstrate the relevant skills, experience, and a passion for environmental impact within the water sector. Dedicated, passionate, and confident, your background in regulation and compliance will give you the foundation to thrive in this role. Your drive and determination will complement your demonstrable ability to deliver results through mentorship and communication. This role requires managing multiple tasks and overseeing a team, so your ability to plan and prioritise is essential. With a background in science or engineering, your open and friendly nature, along with your willingness to learn, will enable you to hit the ground running in this exciting role. A relevant professional membership is desirable, but the Environment Agency will support you in obtaining this and ensure you are provided with all the necessary training. Additionally, due to the location and nature of the work, a full UK driving licence is essential for this role. Unfortunately, this is non-negotiable.

The Environment Agency is evolving how we regulate water companies. Whilst we recognise the crucial role these companies play in the water cycle, by removing, treating and returning water to meet personal and business needs across the country, it is essential that they do so in a way that minimises their environmental impact., The Environment Agency is a non-departmental public body, established in 1995 and sponsored by the United Kingdom government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, with responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England.
