Full Job Description
The Post will start as a training post Band 6 - depending on experience and competencies moving to Band 7 on completion of competencies. The post-holder will be responsible for the day to day management of a cohort of patients requiring advanced venous access/care, including the assessment of patients, selection of most appropriate vascular devices, device insertion and support with ongoing care. The post holder will be one of the four Venous Access / Invasive Device Nurse Specialists across the trust and will be based at Grimsby Hospital. Although the team is managed by the Matron for Critical Care the post holder will be expected to work autonomously, liaising with doctors and nurses of all grades to plan and implement evidenced-based venous access strategies for a complex cohort of acutely / chronically ill and oncological patients, which include the insertion of peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC), mid-line, peripheral cannulas and possibility of progression to insertions of both non-tunneled and tunneled central venous access devices. The post holder will work closely with theTheatres, Anaesthetic and Critical Care nurse Director, implement and maintain a wide range of policies, guidelines, protocols and educational initiatives aimed at ensuring high quality of care of vascular access / invasive devices.Main duties of the job Have an in-depth knowledge and extensive clinical experience with both vascular and invasive devices. Receive and act upon complicated or unpredictable clinical information. Using clinical skills, make decisions on the information, based on specialized clinical knowledge of disease, vascular anatomy and of the patient. Plan immediate clinical intervention if required. Be highly skilled in peripheral cannulation and midline / PICC insertions and be willing to undertake further training to achieve competence more invasive forms of vascular access (non-tunneled and tunneled devices) to ensure a more robust offering of the vascular service and enhancing patient choice and availability of IV therapies. Provide specialist, in formed advice regarding IV therapies for practitioners, patients, families and carers in accordance with agreed protocols and guidance.
- Support healthcare professionals to holistically manage complex therapeutic interventions using multiple approaches to decision making. Identify appropriate patients suitable for PICC lines and following consultation of primary care teams undertake PICC insertions.
