Job ref: cebd22cc8c9a4897acc3d7987143befb
Full Job Description
This role is an exciting opportunity for researchers who are keen to use mathematical and computational methods to solve real-world problems in materials science and engineering. The focus of this role is on modelling and simulating electrically charged polymer gels called polyelectrolyte gels. These materials can change their size and shape in response to their environment, which has led to their use in a vast range of applications including soft robotics, regenerative medicine, and drug delivery. The long-term vision of this project is to use modelling to guide the molecular design of polyelectrolyte gels for use in specific applications. The post holder will join the Complex and Functional Materials (CFM) Lab at the University of Bristol, led by Dr Matthew Hennessy. The CFM Lab is based in the highly interdisciplinary School of Engineering Mathematics and Technology. The post holder will work in close collaboration with experimental researchers from Bristol's School of Chemistry to fully harness the synergy between the mathematical and experimental sciences. More information about the CFM Lab can be found at: https://hennessymatt.github.io/.What will you be doing? The post holder will be responsible for:
- The development of multi-scale models of polyelectrolyte gels using asymptotic methods.
- Numerically solving the models using, for example, the finite element method.
- Collaborating with experimental researchers to validate and refine the modelling.
- Contributing to project meetings.
- Publishing research findings in scientific journals and presenting at conferences.
- Engaging with the wider research community and the public. Contributing to an inclusive and welcoming research environment at Bristol.
This post is ideal for a researcher with a background in applied mathematics and with experience of applying continuum modelling (e.g. fluid/solid mechanics, mass transfer) to real-world problems. The post holder is expected to: - Have (or soon have) a PhD in applied mathematics, physics, engineering, or a similar discipline.
- Have experience of using asymptotic and numerical methods to solve differential equations arising from physical mathematical models.
- Have an excellent understanding of elementary physics (mechanics, electricity and magnetism)
- Have strong programming skills, as demonstrated through one or more significant projects.
- Have a record of publication in peer-reviewed journals that is commensurate with career stage.
- Be passionate about using mathematics as a tool for solving impactful real-world problems and collaborating with experimental researchers.
