Full Job Description
As an Assistant Asset Engineer (Structures Assessment) within the Eastern Region assessment team, you will provide asset management and structural engineering support to the region and wider Network Rail. The role includes the management, technical approval and assurance of structural assessment deliverables as part of the Civils Assessment Framework. The role is responsible for safely managing the capability of structural assets (mostly underline and overline bridges) for the Structures and Buildings teams, ensuring compliance to Network Rail standards. About the role (External), 1. Provide structural engineering support to the team. 2. Support the management of structures assessment compliance in accordance with Network Rail standards. 3. Support the assessment of structures assets and the evaluation of structural assessment reports in accordance with functional policy, systems and standards. 4. Specify and prioritise interim mitigations and permanent interventions to address assessment capability failures and from comments and other issues raised in the reports, in accordance with standards and functional policy. Advise on the production of asset specific management regimes, and development of mitigations if items are deferred. 5. Undertake engineering analysis and risk assessments of assets or asset components to support the assessment process. 6. Monitor trends arising from structures assessment work undertaken from asset capability, risk assessments and failure precursors. 7. Provide structures assessment support to the specification and development of enhancement schemes. 8. Liaise with the central engineering team to develop and disseminate consistent best practice and in the review and development of functional policy and standards. 9. Maintain structures assessment data and information within the company systems and processes. 10. Support the review and development of national standards relating to structures assessment. 11. Support initiatives to develop the buildings & civils strategic direction and input to Control Period bid process in the route. 12. Provide engineering support and participate in investigations of incidents relating to structures. 13. Review proposals from other disciplines or external organisations that could impact on the capability of the route structures assets and/or programmes of work to identify potential synergies or conflicts. 14. Support the process for the review and approval of abnormal vehicular and rail loads. 15. Contribute to the reliability and performance of Structures Assessment systems and processes across the region and in the implementation of corrective actions to improve as required. Including the application of Continuous Improvement principles and tools. 16. Provide engineering input into Structures Assessment systems for the determination of appropriate engineering assessment/intervention regimes in accordance with company policies, standards and specifications. Provide necessary assistance to determine compliance and ensure robustness of all applicable regimes. 17. Manage the monitoring of data which supports the technical development of projects, ascertaining that renewal requirements are sufficient, correctly interpreted and any changes are agreed. Assist with the approval in principle of designs and support acceptance of detailed design certification. 18. Determine mitigation actions necessary to reduce the impact of adverse weather on the performance of the assets.
- HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Significant experience in Civil or Structural Engineering Desirable
- Incorporated Engineer
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Knowledge of Structural Assessment techniques
- Experience of working in the railway industry
- Experience of Structural Assessments
- Knowledge of relevant engineering policies and standards
- An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
