Full Job Description

This new full-time post is available from 6 January 2025 on a fixed term basis until 31 March 2026., The Department of Archaeology and History in conjunction with the Digital Humanities Lab and Research IT at the University of Exeter seek to appoint a Database Manager. This AHRC funded post is available from January 2025 and the contract will be for 15 months, in the first instance. The successful applicant will act as the Database Manager for an open-access, continually updateable, digital repository for the curation and sharing of digital 3D files and other analytical results.
Main duties:
1. Provide researchers with technically-focused research data management advice and consultancy, including:
Working closely with project partners, heritage science organisations, data owners and users to carefully define requirements, ensuring envisaged outputs will meet their needs.
Providing data management services for the project, including planning data management/curation approaches, designing workflows and processes, and ensuring data documentation.
Developing tools/solutions for data and metadata transformations and migrations.
Encouraging the adoption of best practice data management techniques, metadata standards, FAIR data principles, and Open Science values through close working with research teams.
2. Explain, present and disseminate your work to a variety of technical, non-technical and academic audiences, for instance by:
documenting data management processes and scripts, making them open source where possible.
3. Keep up to date with the latest trends and tools for data management and curation, and their potential application in research environments.
4. Advocate for best practice in data management within the research community to build expertise across the university and increase the quality of all research outputs.
5. Provide line management and mentorship for lower-grade staff and work placement students as needed.
This job description summarises the main duties and accountabilities of the post and is not comprehensive: the post-holder may be required to undertake other duties of similar level and responsibility.
Applicants will possess a relevant masters or PhD degree or equivalent experience in Archaeology and experience in a field with significant use of data management techniques.
Fluency in one or more modern programming languages (e.g. Python), a willingness to learn other languages as necessary, and prior experience with databases.
Expertise in modelling heritage science data with linked open data is desirable., Disability Confident
