Full Job Description

The Diabetes Maternity Support Worker (MSW) will primarily work alongside the Specialist Midwives for Diabetes and Obstetricians providing care for women within the antenatal clinic.
They are expected to independently run glucose tolerance test clinics and teach women blood sugar monitoring under the supervision of a midwife, ensuring women receive timely high quality of care. The Diabetes Maternity Support Worker will be responsible for providing parent education on a daily basis in particular surrounding healthy eating and exercise in pregnancy and in the presence of gestational diabetes. The role is varied including undertaking venepuncture, Blood sugar monitoring and observations of women, colostrum collection, parent education, use of the patient record, and liaising with other health professionals.
· The Diabetes Maternity Support Worker will assist the midwife to maintain a high standard of care.
· The Diabetes Maternity Support Worker will observe changes in the condition of mothers, take the prescribed actions and report promptly and accurately to the midwife in charge.
· The Diabetes Maternity Support Worker will be aware of the Trust guidance and policies on all aspects of Health and Safety including Infection control and COSHH (care of substances hazardous to health)., The Diabetes Maternity Support Worker (MSW) will primarily work alongside the Specialist Midwives for Diabetes and Obstetricians providing care for women within the antenatal clinic.
The Maternity Support Worker will primarily work alongside the Midwives and other speciality teams in both the hospital and the community setting where necessary.
The Diabetes MSW may serve as a point of contact/support for women and their families and provide clinical, physical, psychological and emotional care and support. Alongside this they provide appropriate information and, where necessary, signpost to wider support organisations. They report to registered practitioners where planned delegated care has been provided.
The role holder reflects on and actively seeks ways to improve their own performance. They demonstrate qualities of leadership, supporting change management, as well as offering comments and suggestions for improvements to procedures or service development. They prioritise their own workload to ensure timely completion of tasks delegated to them, for reporting to registered practitioners and documenting outcomes of care offered and/or provided on the Trusts patient record., The Diabetes Maternity Support Worker is an integral role within the maternity antenatal pathway. Working in a small team, you will work with the Diabetes Specialist Midwife to ensure a positive experience for those women requiring additional care from the diabetes team.
