Full Job Description

The post-holders will have responsibility for general plastic surgery services and will have a specialist interest in skin cancer, holding clinics at both Oxford University hospitals and Great Western Hospital. This is an opportunity to join the dynamic and enthusiastic team of surgeons to gain experience in a high performing department for Skin Cancer. There is an excellent collaborative working relationship between the hospitals and good support and mentoring is provided for new consultants when they join the department., The post-holder will have responsibility for general plastic surgery services at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. It will have a specialist interest in skin cancer surgery. Two and a half days a week will be spent at Great Western Hospital There will be an on-call commitment (presently 1 in 14). The Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery provides a comprehensive reconstructive surgery service to Oxford and its surrounding areas. We have a consultant-based service. Services provided by existing consultants in the department include plastics trauma surgery, craniofacial surgery, cleft lip and palate, upper limb, bone infection, sarcoma, breast reconstruction, skin cancer, autologous transplantation, head and neck cancer in addition to hypospadias. We have Burn Facility status as part of the London and South East Burn Network. We are fortunate to have our offices, outpatient clinics, theatres, adult and children's wards and day case units co-located in a new block on the John Radcliffe site. The Head & Neck Unit is located in the Cancer Centre at the nearby Churchill Hospital. The Department has a substantial presence at the nearby Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital, where the plastic surgery service has a hand surgery workload, and provides reconstructive support to the Bone Infection Unit and Sarcoma services.

  • Full GMC registration and licence to practise
  • Basic medical qualifications
  • FRCS Plast or its equivalent
  • To have completed a minimum of 6 years training in Plastic Surgery
  • To have a Certificate of Completion of Training
  • Desirable criteria
  • Higher medical degree
  • Further training at Fellowship level in microsurgical breast reconstruction
  • Further training at Fellowship level in Head and Neck surgery, Broad experience in general plastic surgery
  • Competence in all aspects of microsurgical reconstruction.
  • Competence in all aspects of Plastic Surgery lower and upper limb trauma, including hands
  • Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.
  • Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working at consultant level in a major trauma centre
  • Leadership at consultant level of the management of complex trauma in a major trauma center
  • Experience of working as a consultant with a role in breast reconstruction, Excellent leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
  • Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
  • Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training.
  • Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
  • Peer reviewed publications
  • Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management.
  • Desirable criteria

  • Management qualification.

  • Research grants, You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
