Full Job Description
The post holder will be part of the junior Neurology team, ensuring that the highest standards of care, in accordance with the National Service Framework for Neurology and relevant NICE guidance are provided for patients.
The post holder duties will be to provide outpatient clinics, undertake ward referrals at the acute sites, Support a ward referral rota trust-wide, support inpatients within the acute Neurology ward, be involved in the management of the elective patient pathway, be responsible for delivering RTT targets.
A Job Plan will be agreed with the successful applicant which will include being part of the Neurology registrar rota which provides 24/7 cover for the department. The post holder will be supervised by consultant Neurologists and will be expected to become an integral member of the Neurology team., It is expected that the postholder will be part of the Directorates Audit Programme and be involved in the audit meetings, MDM meetings, Intervention meetings and complex patient review meetings and teaching., The post will be expected to participate in teaching other doctors and medical students, nurses and other paramedical staff in the team in speciality and special interest.
Specialty Doctors are expected to participate in annual appraisal and undergo annual job plan review.
The duties and responsibilities in this job description may need further discussion in the future to ensure that they continue to meet the needs of the service, future service developments and the post holder., The registrar doctor shares with other ST3+ the responsibility of looking after the Acute Neurology unit with the support of an attending consultant. There is a daily ward/ Board round by the Consultant. The Consultant reviews the new referrals and the Trust Grade doctor may facilitate information gathering. The successful candidate will support on rotation at the 3 main sites these include Margate and Ashford. The candidate will be proficient in the administering of lumbar puncture procedures and keep a weekly clinic of up to X3 patients. There will be opportunities to conduct Outpatient clinics under consultant supervision.
Ward referrals are managed via Careflow electronic referrals. The SPR is responsible for seeing referrals and should discuss these with the consultant of the day covering the referrals. The Rota for this is available with the corresponding secretarial staff. The SPR should write in the hospital notes that the patient is being seen on behalf of the
attending, on call or covering consultant. Please clearly document your contact details as well (bleep or mobile).
Each SPR should keep a record of referrals seen as part of their training requirements and this log may be reviewed periodically. One of the ways would be to keep a copy of referral request with a brief note of your recommendations and the outcome of the discussion with the consultant.
Participate in the day to day provision of routine and emergency medical and neurological care to a level appropriate to the grade, in the ward. Up to 2 outpatient clinics per week focusing on sub specialties such as Severe Epilepsy, Movement disorder & MS
The Registrar doctor is required to keep an up to date summary of their patients' progress that can be used for ward hand over and can be used to prepare a discharge summary,
Ensure that records of patients in your care are accurate, up to date, legible and signed.
Participation at two Multi-disciplinary team meeting per week and Consultant Ward round is essential duty. The Trust Grade doctor need to work closely with the Junior doctors in the Neurology ward with occasional support as needed. The doctor will work closely with a large Specialist Neurosciences team .
Participation in weekly clinical governance and CPD is required. The appointee may need to assist in the teaching of medical students.
The registrar doctor will ensure that there is plenty of notice to arrange locum cover for leave. Approval of leave is at the discretion of the Clinical Director and is dependent upon the continuity of patient care.
It is desirable for applicants to hold full MRCP or equivalent. Applicants will also have had at least two years acute medical experience. They must have worked for at least twelve months in Neurology. A commitment to life-long training and personal development should be evidenced by the applicant., The ability to converse easily and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for all customer facing roles.
Most positions require a Disclosure and Barring check and will be exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Posts working regularly or unsupervised with children or vulnerable adults require an enhanced check.
