  • Arts is a cornerstone of the British Council's purpose to build connections, understanding and trust between people in the UK and other countries. We find new ways of connecting with and understanding each other through the arts, to develop stronger creative sectors around the world that are better connected with the UK. Our work in Arts builds connections with the diverse cultural riches of the UK, creates new opportunities and inspiration for artists around the world and the fostering of new collaborations with their British counterparts. It strengthens understanding of a modern, vibrant and creative UK among millions of people - particularly young people - in fast-growing economies, building trust, encouraging more trade, investment and tourism. It also helps to bring together divided communities and provides creative ways of responding to challenges by protecting heritage, human rights and a sustainable environment. The British Council is a registered charity incorporated and governed by a Royal Charter. It is led by a Board of Trustees that is accountable to the UK's Charity Commission for its activities. There are three Sector Advisory Groups - for Arts and Creative Economy, Education and English Language. The advisory groups provide advice to the British Council's senior leadership. The groups' functions are solely advisory. They have no decision-making or executive powers. The group's papers and minutes are shared across the Senior Leadership Team and British Council's Board of Trustees. Our equality commitment The British Council is committed to a policy of equality and to valuing diversity. We are actively working to improve diversity across all our governance structures so that they reflect the societies in which we work. We welcome applications from all sections of the community. We aim to abide by and promote equality legislation by following both the letter and the spirit of it to avoid unjustified discrimination, recognising discrimination as a barrier to equality of opportunity, inclusion and human rights. All staff worldwide are required to ensure their behaviour is consistent with our policies. The British Council has Disability Confident Employer Status. We offer a guaranteed interview scheme for disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria for the role. Applicants are encouraged to highlight any specific requirements or adjustments needed to enable participation in the recruitment process. Terms and Conditions Members are appointed for a three-year term. This may be renewed. About the Arts and Creative Economy Advisory Group: a note from the Chair, David Bryan CBE: "The Arts and Creative Economy Advisory Group has a sharp focus on dynamic problem solving and in-depth advice giving. We have four lively meetings a year where all members contribute. Whilst we prefer sessions to be in person, we run a hybrid approach for those needing to join online. We take presentations on projects in their infancy, enabling us to influence the British Council's agenda in some detail at each session. We do not shy away from complex and demanding questions nor from provocations. Presenters expect supportive engagement and to facilitate our purpose by opening their presentations with a question and ending with a series of follow up questions. We see our role as that of critical friend and we push the British Council to be its best. Our current membership has a notable interest in equality, diversity and inclusion and this sits at the nexus of all our discussions." The formal role of members of the Arts and Creative Economy Advisory Group, as set out in its terms of reference, is to
