Full Job Description
At Tesco, we believe in the power of spending more time together, face to face, than apart. So, during your working week, you can expect to spend 60% of your time in one of our office locations or local sites and the rest remotely. We also recognise that life looks a little different for each of us. Some people are at the start of their careers, some want the freedom to do the things they love. Others are going through life-changing moments like becoming a carer, nearing retirement, adapting to parenthood, or something else. That's why at Tesco, we always welcome a conversation about flexible working. So, talk to us throughout your application about how we can support.
You will be responsible for:
Your impact reaches beyond the immediate team, and you provide perspective and context for technology choices across your directorate.
The work that you do has foundational impact across teams in your area and the directorate that you are member of. You are a technical leader for your teams and others will regularly come to you for mentorship and support.
You are comfortable both supporting other engineers in their delivery and taking the lead on key features as appropriate. You have delivered multiple projects that move the needle for the business. You have demonstrated technical breadth and depth.
You display a high degree of ownership for the work conducted by the team. You are accountable for the quality of every result, produced by individuals and teams. You are an advocate of best practices across your directorate.
You build maturity in the way we develop, deliver and operate services. You ensure that your team are learning from the best in the industry, designing and implementing appropriate testing and deployment strategies.
You can anticipate feature evolution of the product. You utilise this when facilitating design sessions to ensure that the system architecture evolves to support future requirements. You understand the wider Tesco architectural strategy and champion its application to the systems that you work on.
At this level your job starts to become just as much about exercising technical judgment as it does about implementation.
You are comfortable managing competing priorities and are able to bring order to ambiguous scenarios. You create optimal outcomes combining short-term and long-term goals, utilising data driven decision making techniques to take appropriate trade-offs. You can identify risks and proactively engage with product and programme managers.
You are a strong communicator within the team and to the team's stakeholders.
You are a trusted mentor, a role-model for more junior engineers, being approachable and are frequently asked to mentor those around you.
You prioritise sharing skills and technical knowledge across the directorate, both informally in 1:1 discussions and by arranging more formal training opportunities.
You build capability and raise the bar by contributing to hiring and interviewing practices. You regularly participate in recruitment assessments.
Externally you represent the best of Tesco Technology to attract new talent and encourage interest in our organisation.
You will need:
Experience with Java 17+ is a must.
Experience using Kafka.
Experience scaling systems.
Experience working with multiple software development methodologies including Scrum, Kanban and Waterfall.
Experience with eCommerce and search systems would be a nice to have, but not necessary.
Our vision at Tesco is to become every customer's favourite way to shop, whether they are at home or out on the move. We are proud to have an inclusive culture at Tesco where everyone truly feels able to be themselves. At Tesco, we not only celebrate diversity, but recognise the value and opportunity it brings. We're committed to creating a workplace where differences are valued, and make sure that all colleagues are given the same opportunities. We're a big business with diverse working patterns and many business areas which means that we can find something that works for you. Everyone is welcome at Tesco.
We have recently announced that we will be moving towards a more blended working week - combining office and remote working. Our offices will continue to be where we connect, collaborate and innovate. Please talk to us to about how this can work for you.
